GM Ingredients Policy

At George Weston Foods, we understand and respect the concerns that customers have in regards to genetically modified (GM) foods.

Rest assured, we use no GM ingredients (those containing detectable novel DNA or protein) in any of our consumer branded products, or ingredients that they supply.

Should we ever consider the use of GM ingredients, we would first seek a safety assessment and approval by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). We would also need to be convinced of the particular ingredient’s safety, public acceptability, quality and practical potential, and ensure that no other suitable alternative is available.

Then and only then, would we consider use of GM ingredients. Any decision by the company to use GM ingredients would be made with our consumers’ best interests in mind.

If we used GM ingredients, our products would be labelled in compliance with FSANZ Standard 1.5.2: Foods Produced using Gene Technology.

The following measures are taken to minimise the chance of inadvertently introducing GM ingredients into the products we manufacture.

Supplier Management Program:

  1. All suppliers are issued with GWF’s GM Policy.
  2. The GM status of ingredients is determined prior to use by way of a documented supplier declaration (including an Identity Preservation System where appropriate).
  3. The GM status of ingredients is monitored by way of supplier audits and testing where appropriate.
  4. Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) programs are in place at all manufacturing sites.
  5. The GM status of all products are documented and reviewed as appropriate.
